The NBC affiliate in the Twin Cities area, KARE 11, launched an eleven-week initiative called the "Great Green Challenge" on February 5.  In weekly segments, meteorologist Laura Betker has been providing ideas for businesses to adopt simple and effective methods for reducing, reusing, and recycling.

Six weeks into the challenge, there have been some excellent recommendations:

1)    Identifying someone to lead the charge, and for that person to establish partnership throughout the organization.

2)  Making sure that recyclable items such as beverage cans and bottles are actually recycled, and not simply thrown away.

3)  Not printing unnecessary documents, and using double-sided printing otherwise.

4)  Confirming that the process is visible and accessible to everyone by providing a sufficient number of recycling bins.

5)  Donating and reusing unwanted items.

6)  Using (and washing) silverware for meals served during staff meetings instead of disposable plastic flatware.

I would encourage everyone to adapt and adopt these recommendations within our own homes as well.  In the apartment complex where I live, for example, we have placed a recycling bin in the clubhouse, and the 96-gallon containers at our central collection points have been replaced with four cubic foot bins.  No longer are people stacking recyclables in the driveway and running the risk of them scattering in the wind, nor are people just throwing up their hand and placing recyclables in with the trash.

For more information about KARE 11's Great Green Challenge, please go to this link:   http://www.kare11.com/news/greenchallenge/default.aspx.  They are working in partnership with a company called Rethink Recycling, about whom more can be found here:  http://www.rethinkrecycling.com/businesses/recycling-disposal-info.

Do you see opportunities for improvement in your own household or workplace's conservation efforts?  How will you take action to implement your observations?  Please feel free to share your comments below.

I will provide a recap of the Great Green Challenge at the end of the eleven-week period. Special thanks to Ms Betker and to KARE 11 for underscoring the importance of this matter.  Please join me in applauding the initiative.

Go Green on Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day is rapidly approaching, and for many people, that means parades and green beer.  For others, it means littered streets and believing that "amateur night" will mean that more drunk drivers will be on the roads than there unfortunately are on average nights.  As the "holiday" falls on a Sunday this year, my belief is that this years celebrations will be a two-and-a-half day Bacchanalia, ending in a nightmare that is anything but green in the eyes of environmentalists.

For those of a certain age, the motto of United States Forest Service mascot Woodsy Owl, "Give a hoot, don't pollute!" will be quite familiar.  Although the wording has changed to "Lend a hand, care for the land," the message stays the same, and it applies everywhere, not just the forests.

Littering is inconsiderate on so many levels.  Primarily, it suggests that one person or group's concerns are more important than another's, that there will be someone else to come along to clean up the mess.

We all share one earth, and it pains me to see when some people knowingly and actively choose to inflict harm upon it.

Here's the long and the short of it:  instead of cleaning up someone else's messes, instead of cleaning up our own messes, we need to look at ways of not making them in the first place.

Some people lift beers.  I lift a fork.  The young lady in the photo at right has obviously lifted a weight or two.  Let's lift each other's spirits by going "green," not just on March 17th, but every day.

Some Things Never Change

Sometimes, people for whom I have a great deal of respect do the silliest things....

I spend a great deal of time with senior citizens, and as with any other age group, it is occasionally the case that the topic of conversation will turn to a disagreement that one of them had with a neighbor.

In my opinion, this is perfectly understandable.  We all have people with whom we just can't seem to get along for some reason.  Maybe he's too loud.  Maybe she speaks too softly.  Some people interrupt stories, while others just.  don't.  stop.  talking!

Wikipedia defines term argument as follows:   "In logic and philosophy, an argument is an attempt to persuade someone of something, by giving reasons for accepting a particular conclusion as evident."

Now, I enjoy a good exchange of thoughts and will myself be the first person who will take a Devil's Advocate position.  Far too often though, the arguments about which I hear are mostly about a contest of wills.  If someone tries to pull me into the raging controversy of the moment, I will listen to the "facts," and then tell them that I have no interest in participating in any contests.

Occasionally, I will witness one of these verbal donnybrooks take place first hand, and something that starts out with a solid foundation can degrade into the forensic equivalent of a Three Stooges slap-a-thon, with one party who seems to have an unquenchable thirst for the last word.

My obvious misunderstanding was that this sort of thing was restricted to seven-year-olds and those who need to fight turf wars, such as the homeless people whom I used to serve when I worked for a faith-based non-profit organization.

It seems as though people have a lifelong need to be "correct," even when that compromises what it means to be "right," and that just makes me sad.

I just want to ask people:

1)  What was your goal?
2)  What did that accomplish?
3)  Could you have handled it differently?
4)  How would you like it if someone had treated you like that?

...and sometimes, I do - with little success.  Very few people like to be challenged.

Other times, I just leave the room for a few minutes and allow things to work themselves out on their own... and then I hear about it later anyway.

Do you find this to be the case?  How do you handle it?  Please feel free to leave you comments below.

Road Trip! Part 2 of 2

Note:  If you haven't yet read my entry about the first part of this trip, please be sure to do so.  Thanks!

Mermaid Ayla

~Mermaid!~

My Mom and I finally got to the Radisson Hotel Duluth Harborview at about 2:30 PM.  Now, I have corresponded with dozens and dozens of mermaids online, seen a few of them at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival in 2012, and even talked with a couple of them on the telephone, but up until that point, I had never met a mermaid in person (or in mer-son, if you prefer).

We met Ayla (pronounced EYE-la) in her human form in the hotel lobby, from which she escorted us to the swimming pool area, where she made her transformation into the half-woman/ half-fish of folklore.  For the next two-and-a-half hours, she got in some practice swim time, interacted with the hotel guests and staff, and shared some of her time talking with me and my Mom.  She told me of the media coverage that she has garnered since I sent a Tweet to the local newspaper, the Duluth News-Tribune, including an interview with said newspaper; one of the local news stations; and the Twin Cities' own "On the Road" reporter, Jason Davis.  I am so glad to have been able to play some small role in launching her success, but believe me, I have no illusions:  apart from that Tweet, Ayla has done this all on her own.

You would think with all of that enthusiasm, I would have gotten a photo with her, but we didn't make  that happen.  Perhaps there will be a "next time" this summer, and maybe then, I can even make an arrangement with the Radisson to spend some time in the pool myself.

All good things must come to an end though, and as the clock approached 5:00 PM, Ayla indicated that she would be calling it a day.  When she got dressed, my Mom and I offered to take her out to dinner, either to the hotel's penthouse carousel restaurant - the JJ Astor Restaurant and Lounge, or to the Buffet at the Bear, i.e., the Black Bear Casino Resort.  Due to other plans, Ayla was unable to accept either of these offers, so we said "Goodbye" and walked floated back to the car.

~Dinner!~

After we left the hotel, we were faced with the decision as to how best to budget our time.  A tentative plan had been to go to the Miller Hall Mall, but at that point, we decided that it simply would have meant the addition of unnecessary miles (and time), so we just drove the twenty miles to the casino.

When we got there, the line for the buffet was very long, and I was afraid that we would be standing and waiting for an incredible amount of time.  To my surprise and delight, everything whisked along quite rapidly, and before we knew it, we were seated.

Many years ago, this buffet was good, but it was by no means whatsoever great; however, somewhere in the interim, it became spectacular.  As you can see from the photo on the left, the selection on 12/10/2011 was just wonderful (in my opinion), and the evening of February 16 proved to be quite the same, including lamb chops and beef Wellington.  There were also steaks, barbecued ribs, a carving station, pretty much the whole nine.  Even though the casino is 18+, of course, the buffet is family-friendly, and there were several large groups with many children.

If it were closer, I would definitely go there more often, and I *highly* recommend it to anyone who is going to be going through the area!

After dinner, my Mom and I walked through the casino for a little while, until it was time for me to go.  When my Dad was alive, they would go to various casinos at least three times every month, but in the nine years since he died, that has just not been feasible.  My sister and brother-in-law have a variety of responsibilities, and I do not particularly like to gamble, so my mom's casino outings are limited to the monthly bus trip that includes her apartment complex and  three other senior citizen complexes in the area.  Because of "majority rule," they usually wind up going to a smaller, slower-paced venue, never opting for change.  This was the best of both worlds - my Mom got to gamble while I got to pursue other activities.

~Burlesque!~

Teattro Zuccone is a bit confusing at first, because there is SO much going on!  There is the Zinema 2, the Performance Theater, the Zeitgeist Arts Café, and the Atrium Lobby (pictured at right).  It was in that last space that the Four Seasons Masquerade Ball was scheduled to be held and where the Duluth Dolls were to perform.  This posed some complications, as one entire wall of the Atrium Lobby is glass - windows from which passersby can look in.  While burlesque is by no means "dirty," it is certainly not something that children should be seeing.  Eventually, one of the organizers started to cover the windows with paper.  A second complication was that, although the event was well-publicized and there were many people in the building, none of the patrons seemed to be there for the Ball.

As a three-piece ensemble played music, the members of the Duluth Dolls had discussions with a man who appeared to be the event promoter, and we were all given assurances that the show would go on.  As time ticked away, that afforded those of us who were there for the Ball to have to chance to talk with each other, as well as to get to meet and talk with the performers.  If there is one thing that I love, it is burlesque performer stage names, and the Duluth Dolls just underscored that:  Ella Jim (who had told me about the event), June LaPurr, Miss Creant, and Ruby Sparkles.  The troupe is larger, but I did not get a chance to talk with all of the performers, and some of them were not able to attend the event.

In the end, unfortunately, things just did not go as planned, and the promoter refunded everyone's money in full.  I am not at all disappointed though, because I got to meet some wonderful people and talk with them more as people than as performers.  Since I "like" their fan page on Facebook, I will be sure to keep myself advised of their upcoming performances.  Duluth might be a stretch, but if they come down to the Twin Cities again, I will definitely be at their show!

~The Drive Home~

I left Duluth, stopped at Black Bear Casino Resort and picked up my Mom - who was kind enough to be playing at a machine right by the entrance, and got back on the road for what from there was the 120-mile drive home.  That drive at that time is a cake walk, in my opinion, as there is almost no traffic at all the entire time.  It had been a very long day though (and a late night on Friday as well), so I was getting very tired and was thankful to have my Mom's company.

In what was an otherwise perfect day, we unfortunately came across an accident at approximately 2:20 AM.  From what I have since been able to determine, it was a one-car accident.  The driver was heading southbound, and he reportedly crossed from the right lane of traffic to the left, into the shoulder, and then into the median, where he was ejected from his vehicle, as he was not wearing his seat belt.  Of course, the only thing that I knew at the time was that the emergency response was extensive, and that the numerous police cars and ambulances lit up the area brilliantly.  I do not know how  the driver ultimately fared.

That got my attention, to say the very least.  For the rest of the drive home, I was hyper-vigilant, and we arrived without incident.  I sent a Tweet at 3:07 AM that read "Back home after 16.5 hours and 346 miles.  Lunch at the Little Mermaid Cafe, met a #mermaid, met some #burlesque performers.  Good day!"

~Epilogue~

I look forward to the next occasion where I can go to Duluth, Rochester, or some other city in Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Iowa and spend the day.  Maybe it won't be mermaids and burlesque next time.  Who knows what excitement the future holds?

Road Trip! Part 1 of 2

~Prologue~

On Valentine's Day, my friend Musette the Mistress of Mischief hosted her Midnight Muse Presents! dinner and burlesque show at the Wicked Moose Bar & Grill in Rochester, Minnesota, and it was my pleasure to attend in the company of my friend Nicolette Moll.  We both thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and the show, and we engaged in captivating conversation throughout the course of the evening.

After driving the ninety miles back to the Twin Cities and dropping Ms Moll off at her residence, I went to the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in Saint Paul to see if the Duluth Dolls were still at the venue after having appeared in a show there that night.    It was my fortune to meet Ella Jim, who advised me of their show on the 16th - only two nights (and 140 miles) away.

I started to give the matter some serious thought....  In a blog entry dated November 26, 2012, I wrote about my affinity for mermaids, and it just so happened  that my friend Mermaid Ayla has recently made an arrangement with the Radisson hotel to swim in their pool.  If I could meet her - assuming she was agreeable to it - and go to The Four Seasons Masquerade Ball to see the Duluth Dolls, it was on!  And on, dear reader, it was.

My Odometer at 123,456.7 Miles
I also have photos of 100,000 and 121,212.1
I'm cool like that.
Since the plan was to go up there and return all in the same day, my Mom wanted to make sure that there was someone with me who would help keep me awake, particularly on the ride home, and who better than herself?  When I told this to one of my friends, she reacted with some puzzlement - "You're going to take your Mom to a burlesque show?"  Of course not.  In fact, I didn't even specify the exact nature of my evening plans to my Mom, and since Black Bear Casino was relatively nearby, we would eat dinner at the buffet there, and she could stay at the casino and gamble while I went to the Masquerade Ball.

Incidentally, I knew that my odometer would reach 123,456.7 miles during this trip, and I was fortunate enough to be able to pull off into a gas station in Rush City to capture a photo of that and not have to stop on the shoulder.

~The Drive to Duluth~

February in Minnesota can mean bad weather, cold temperatures, and icy roads, but we were fortunate to have a sunny day and good traffic - with no construction!  As indicated above, the trip is about 140 miles one way.

The trip to Duluth is one of my lifelong favorite pastimes, and with it usually comes a few mandatory stops: Tobie's Restaurant and Bakery in Hinckley, with their world-famous caramel rolls (and other baked goods); Sturgeon Lake, to drive past the property that had once been the site of my paternal grandparents' summer cabin; and Moose Lake, to see relatives on my Mom's side of the family.  Unfortunately, only Tobie's made the cut that day, as adding a new stop along the way took precedence over tradition.

Since I was going to spend some time with a mermaid during the afternoon, why not turn it into a full-on mermaid geek-out day?  There was no better place to do that than The Little Mermaid Cafe at the Pine County Historical Museum in Askov!  They had a menu with a lot of variety, the portion sizes were good, and the prices were reasonable.  Our server was a young woman to whom I later referred as "the very accurately named Joy," who took care of us very well.  In addition to the good food and service, there was a fair amount of mermaid decor, as well as old-timey photos of the main streets of local towns - the same towns that I had visited whenever my family went to my grandparents' cabin.  I hope to return there this summer and have the opportunity to spend more time in the cafe, museum, and in the small town of just under 400 people.

After lunch, it was Duluth or bust!  After an uneventful drive, we arrived, and there were Duluth and Lake Superior displayed in all of their winter glory.  It can sometimes be anti-climactic to arrive at that point of the drive, because there are occasions when fog blankets the harbor and the town, but not this time.  It was absolutely beautiful.

After a quick spin up Superior Street to confirm the location of the Masquerade Ball, we parked the car and walked a  few blocks to the beautiful Radisson hotel to meet a real live mermaid and see her swim!

Words Have Power

"Yev Kassem," played by Larry Thomas
http://www.philly.com/....

This entry has weighed heavily upon my soul for a  very long time, as addressing it means discussing one of  the greatest horrors this world has ever seen, but remaining silent makes me complicit with those who so continue to perpetrate insensitivity upon the world with neither forethought nor reflection.

I used to love the show Seinfeld and still watch it in reruns whenever time permits, and when I finally created my Facebook profile, the official fan page was among my first round of "likes."

The sixth episode of the seventh season, entitled The Soup Nazi, originally aired on November 2, 1995.  I don't know when that started to bother me, and it pains me to consider the possibility that it took a full fifteen years, when I started seeing the term "grammar Nazi" on Facebook.

The Seinfeld episode was by no means the first use of the term "Nazi" to cast aspersions upon those who  enforce strict guidelines.  In fact, while doing a little bit of research for this entry, I found that political satirist P.J. O'Rourke wrote an article called Safety Nazis for the March 15, 1982 edition of Inquiry.

Actual Facebook Screencap, Redacted
Used without Permission
It's not just that term though.

The high school that I attended closed in 2010, and with it also went The Medallion, the quarterly magazine published by our alumni association.  Although it contained articles with writing that must have made our English teacher Mister Docherty cringe, and the sports schedules were already outdated when the magazine came in the mail, there were occasionally some interesting things to read.  Just today, the alumni association announced that The Medallion will now be available in online format.  In response, someone used the term "Gestapo," and then later went on to write that he was "Totally kidding!"  *I* was not amused.  He went on to make numerous additional comments that were relevant neither to the new format roll-out nor to the scope of this blog entry.

While, of course, I take issue with the commenter who "jokingly" referred to our alumni magazine as "Gestapo propaganda," I take infinitely more issue with the alumni association - both for dignifying the comment in the first place and for de facto distancing themselves from the Church and Archdiocese that provided the backbone of the school for fifty years.  Part of me wants to ask if a formal affiliation would mean "Gestapo Propaganda," but any attempt to apply sense to the conversation will just make me look foolish.

Hyperbole

It really frustrates me.

People compare our national leaders to Adolf Hitler.  I don't even have the words to express how maddening this is to me.  It's one thing to have disagreements with someone's policies, but to make such an irrational jump boggles me.  If you don't like a politician, I encourage you to reverse this idea and compare him or her to someone you love - and see how ridiculous that is to you.

It goes beyond mere hyperbole though and into the realm of the delusional, but whatever the case, it is always tragically and inhumanly insensitive to the history of the ten to thirteen million (or more) people who were systematically executed over a six-year period as part of a "final solution."

We need to find new words to express our frustrations with rules and with our rulers, because some of the ones that we are using reveal our ignorance and insensitivity.  In the meantime, whenever I see the words "Nazi," "Gestapo," or "Hitler" applied to a modern-day situation, I will lose whatever respect I may have had for the person who used those words, and his or her argument will be rendered summarily invalid in my eyes.

To be consistent....  What are your thoughts on this?  Please feel free to share your comments below.

A Strange Memory

"Grandpa Ralph's Birthday Cake"
Note that my Grandpa's name was William

I have always had the luxury (for me, at least) of having very close-knit extended families on both my Mom's and Dad's sides of the family.  This June, for example, will mark the 66th Annual Morse Family Reunion, and my Mom's family - the Tschida's - will also be getting together in July.  As I grow older, these times, along with weddings, become more and more cherished, as the only other time we all ever get together en masse is for the solemn occasions of funerals.

Let's turn back the clock twenty-seven years, to April, 1986.   I was fifteen years old, and my sister was ten.  It was my Grandpa Morse's 68th birthday party, and much of his family was present - children and their spouses, grandchildren, several siblings and their spouses.  We we all gathered in my grandparents' living room for the occasion, when in walked "Boris and Natasha," who can best be described as a dominatrix and an executioner.  They were there to perform a "fantasy gram."  I am dubiously pleased to report after having watched a home video of the event this afternoon that my memories are disturbingly accurate.
Candice Michelle as Catwoman
http://www.flickr.com/....

After singing the birthday dirge, Boris (loosely) wrapped a rope around my Grandpa and introduced Natasha, who went on to ask a series of questions.  My Grandpa was instructed to respond "Yes, Natasha" to each of her inquiries.  After a bit of this nonsense, Natasha then sang a song while removing her dress, leaving her in a black bikini, mask, and nylons.  Before having watched the video, I did a Google Image search and found a great number of photos unsuitable for sharing here, but this image of Candice Michelle as Catwoman comes somewhat close.

Watching the video with 42-year-old eyes, it now seems as though it was not really that big of a deal; however, as I wrote above, I was fifteen at the time and my sister was ten.  Additionally, four of our cousins (who can be heard in the background saying such things as "Who is that lady?") were all under the age of five.  I brought this up to my sister and Mom quite randomly just the other day, and my sister indicated that she did not really understand what was happening at the time, identifying the actors only as "scary Renaissance Festival people."  She further indicated that it now makes her somewhat angry when she occasionally remembers that day.

It was an over-sexualized brand of entertainment to thrust upon a family gathering where it was well-known in advance that many children would be present, and as such, it was highly inappropriate.  It is with those eyes that I remember that day.  Oddly enough, the people who arranged for the fantasy gram were themselves not even present to witness it taking place.

There is yet another side to this.

We all clearly loved my Grandpa very much, but the fact of the matter was that he could be a real son of a bitch.  We enjoyed dinners at very nice restaurants, went on family vacations with my grandparents, swam at their lake throughout the summer months, and so very much more.  He was a great guy, and I miss him - but he was also impatient, and some of the things he said smacked of racism, sexism, or I-can't-believe-he-just-said-that-ism... and he never heard a swear word that he didn't like.  Family lore is that I said "F*** you" to a babysitter, which was blamed on my Grandpa's influence.  The young lady reportedly never babysat for me again.

Perhaps I watched too much fiction on television, but it was with this side of my Grandpa's personality in mind that the thought crossed my mind - for more than a realistic period of time - that the dominatrix/ executioner act was prelude to killing him.  With ALL of us present, no one would dare to call the police, right?

Thank goodness, there was no grand conspiracy to rid the world of an overall wonderful man, and he wound up living another three years and five months, dying on September 11, 1989.  That date had significance to me long before 2001, and it now has many meanings, some sad, some tragic, and some good ones as well, as it also marked the wedding date for one of my favorite couples.
