Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

The Day Our Hearts Rejoice
The month is March, the day Seventeen.
Let's skip and dance on Erin's green, All on St. Patrick's Day.

~Traditional Gaelic Blessing~

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I have never been one to drink very much, and it can often be cold in Minnesota in mid-March, so the whole idea of standing outside and watching a parade holds little appeal for me.  Because of this, March 17 is really just another day on the calendar, other than that I have a family member who celebrates her birthday today.

Nevertheless, it is interesting to see how others observe it.  Does Saint Patrick's Day have any significance to you?  If so, how do you celebrate it?  Please feel free to share your comments below.

Go Green on Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day is rapidly approaching, and for many people, that means parades and green beer.  For others, it means littered streets and believing that "amateur night" will mean that more drunk drivers will be on the roads than there unfortunately are on average nights.  As the "holiday" falls on a Sunday this year, my belief is that this years celebrations will be a two-and-a-half day Bacchanalia, ending in a nightmare that is anything but green in the eyes of environmentalists.

For those of a certain age, the motto of United States Forest Service mascot Woodsy Owl, "Give a hoot, don't pollute!" will be quite familiar.  Although the wording has changed to "Lend a hand, care for the land," the message stays the same, and it applies everywhere, not just the forests.

Littering is inconsiderate on so many levels.  Primarily, it suggests that one person or group's concerns are more important than another's, that there will be someone else to come along to clean up the mess.

We all share one earth, and it pains me to see when some people knowingly and actively choose to inflict harm upon it.

Here's the long and the short of it:  instead of cleaning up someone else's messes, instead of cleaning up our own messes, we need to look at ways of not making them in the first place.

Some people lift beers.  I lift a fork.  The young lady in the photo at right has obviously lifted a weight or two.  Let's lift each other's spirits by going "green," not just on March 17th, but every day.
